The beautiful estate of Monticello gave home to Thomas Jefferson, who designed it himself. It sits at an elevation of nearly 900 feet overlooking the Rivanna Gap; visitors may wander its elegant, beautifully manicured grounds, or tour the house itself, viewing such attractions as Jefferson's Great Clock, artifacts from the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the third President's unique habit of building beds into the walls to conserve space. The estate lies about six miles northwest of downtown, in the Southwest Mountains.
