Created as a place for artists to create and display their works as well as for the general public to be able to see and take part in artistic creation, the McGuffy Art Center is Charlottesville's haven for community arts. Every month, the works of the center's artists are displayed for the public to see. An event particularly popular is the monthly First Friday arts exhibition that takes place at the center and throughout the city. Classes for adults, teens and young children run throughout the year, including explorations of both the visual and performance arts. The art center is situated in what used to be McGuffey Elementary School, set near the center of town and close to the Virginia Discovery Museum.
